Graphic design, known as communication design and problem-solving, is the art of visual and textual content of planning and extending ideas. The communication can be in the form of physical or virtual and may include typography and images. The design work can happen at any scale and can be for any purpose. Common uses of graphic design include corporate design (logos and branding), editorial design (magazines, newspapers and books), advertising, web design, environmental design, communication design, product packaging and signage. Graphic design is essential in the sales and marketing of products and is a critical component of brochures and logos.
Create Visual Concepts
Graphic designers create visual concepts to communicate ideas that inspire or captivate the consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports, etc. Graphic designers combine art and technology to communicate their ideas through images and the layout of prints and websites, and they use a variety of design elements to create an artistic or decorative design effect. They work with both text and images; also they decide how images and text will go together on a print or webpage, and how much space each will have.
Work Specialization
Graphic designers frequently specialize in a particular category or type of client; also they need to keep up to date with the latest software and computer technologies to remain competitive. They generally work in studios, although many works independently, and those who work for specialized firms often work as part of a design team.
Many graphic designers collaborate with colleagues on projects or work with clients located around the world. Most graphic designers work full time, but schedules can vary depending on the workload and deadlines. Graphic designers who are self-employed may need to adjust their workday to meet with clients. Also, they may spend some of their time looking for new projects or competing with other designers for contracts.
Graphic designers typically do the following:
- Meet with clients or the art director to determine the scope of a project
- Advise clients on strategies to reach a particular audience
- Determine the message the design should portray
- Create images that identify a product or convey a message
- Develop graphics for product illustrations, logos, and websites
- Select
colors , images, text style, and layout - Present the design to clients or the art director
- Incorporate changes recommended by the clients into the final design
- Review designs for errors before printing or publishing them
