Summary
Discover essential tips for preparing your newborn for a photo session and what to expect during the shoot. From scheduling the session to creating a comfortable environment, this guide will help you capture timeless memories of your little one's early days.
Your baby’s first days are filled with tiny details that change remarkably quickly—their little fingers, sleepy expressions, soft features, and the way they naturally curl into you. A newborn photography session lets you preserve this short season of your baby’s story in meaningful photographs you can return to for years.
If this is your first newborn session, you may also have questions. When should you book? Should your baby be asleep before arriving? What should you bring? What happens if your baby needs to feed or simply does not want to settle?
The most important thing to know is that your baby does not need to perform for the camera. At MB Graphic & Photography Design, I guide my newborn sessions around your baby’s comfort, safety, and individual needs. I allow time for feeding, changing, cuddling, and settling so the experience stays calm for both baby and parents.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Photography Session?
Whenever possible, I recommend contacting your newborn photographer before your baby arrives. You do not need to know your baby’s exact birth date when you book. Your estimated due date gives a starting point, and you can confirm the final session date after your baby is born.
For my newborn sessions, I generally photograph babies between approximately 5 and 21 days old. During these early weeks, many newborns still naturally enjoy being curled and wrapped, which can work beautifully for the soft, sleepy style associated with newborn photography.
However, every baby develops differently. If your baby is already older than this range, please don’t assume you have missed your chance to capture beautiful photographs. We can adjust the session around your baby’s age, comfort, alertness, and individual needs.
The goal is never to force a baby into a particular style simply because of their age.
Feed Your Baby According to Their Normal Needs
Parents sometimes feel pressure to completely change their baby’s feeding or sleeping schedule before newborn photographs. You usually don’t need to create unnecessary stress. Feed your baby according to their needs and the instructions you have received from your healthcare provider.
Depending on the timing of your session, we may allow time for a feeding before photography begins or pause during the session whenever your baby becomes hungry.
- A newborn session should have room for real newborn needs.
- Feeding breaks are normal.
- Diaper changes are normal.
- Cuddles are normal.
And sometimes babies simply need a few extra minutes in their parent’s arms before they are ready to continue. None of these things mean the session is going badly.

You Do Not Need to Keep Your Baby Awake for Hours
You may come across advice suggesting that parents should keep their newborn awake for a long period before their photography session so that the baby will sleep more deeply. I prefer a gentler approach. An overtired baby may actually have a harder time settling.
Rather than trying to completely change your baby’s normal rhythm, focus on keeping the morning or hours before the session as calm as possible. Your baby’s comfort is more important than achieving a particular pose or photograph.
If your baby arrives awake, that is perfectly fine too. Alert newborn portraits can be incredibly beautiful and often capture expressions parents rarely expect to see during a session.
Dress Your Baby Simply for Arrival
Before your newborn session, consider dressing your baby in something that is easy to remove. Complicated outfits, several tight layers, or clothing that needs to be pulled firmly over the baby’s head may disturb a baby who has just fallen asleep.
Simple, comfortable clothing makes the transition into wraps or session outfits easier. You do not need to arrive with an elaborate wardrobe for your newborn. I provide wraps and selected props for my newborn photography sessions, and we can discuss colours and styling before your session so everything works together beautifully.
My style leans toward clean, timeless, and thoughtfully styled photographs rather than overly busy setups that compete with your baby’s tiny features. Your baby should always remain the focus.
What Should You Bring to a Newborn Photography Session?
You do not need to pack your entire nursery. A few familiar essentials are usually enough.
Consider bringing:
- Diapers and wipes
- Feeding supplies normally used by your baby
- Extra formula or expressed milk if applicable to your normal feeding routine
- A pacifier if your baby already uses one
- A change of clothing for your baby
- An extra shirt for yourself—you may appreciate having one
- Any meaningful item we have discussed using during the session
If you would like to include a sentimental object, such as a small family keepsake, let me know before the session. Not every keepsake will be suitable or safe to place directly beside a newborn, but we can determine an appropriate way to incorporate it.

What Happens When You Arrive?
I like to begin newborn sessions gently. Rather than moving immediately from one pose to another, I give your baby time to get comfortable in the environment.
My newborn workflow will often begin with wrapping, because many babies feel secure and comfortable when properly wrapped. From there, depending on how your baby is responding, we may move into posing-bag photographs and then use selected props.
Parents can choose two props for their newborn session, allowing us to create variety while still keeping the gallery visually harmonious rather than overcrowded with setups.
The exact sequence can change from one baby to another.
No rule requires every newborn to complete every pose. Your baby’s comfort determines our pace.
Newborn Safety Always Comes Before the Photograph
This is one of the most important parts of choosing a newborn photographer. Newborn photography involves more than owning a camera and buying cute props.
Babies have limited head and neck control, delicate circulation, and individual physical needs. A photographer must understand how to support and observe a newborn throughout the session.
In my sessions, I never force a newborn into a pose. If your baby shows that they are uncomfortable with a position, I will modify it, move to something else, or stop.
Some photographs seen online may also involve professional compositing techniques rather than placing the baby unsupported in a difficult position.
No photograph is important enough to compromise your baby’s comfort or safety. When you are choosing a newborn photographer, I encourage you to look beyond the prettiest image in the portfolio.
Ask yourself:
- Does this photographer talk about newborn safety?
- Do the babies look comfortable and naturally supported?
- Does the photographer allow time for feeding and settling?
- Will the photographer stop or modify a pose if the baby does not tolerate it?
Those questions matter.
A Warm, Calm Environment Helps Baby Settle
Newborns are accustomed to warmth, closeness, and consistent background sounds. During newborn sessions, I create a comfortable studio environment and may use gentle white noise to help maintain a calm atmosphere.
I also keep the room appropriately warm because newborns may spend parts of the session wrapped lightly or photographed in minimal clothing.
Parents should dress comfortably with this in mind. The environment isn’t meant to guarantee that your baby will sleep. It simply gives your baby a calm place in which we can work at their pace.
What If My Baby Cries During the Session?
Then we pause. Crying is communication. Your baby may be hungry, need changing, want to be held, feel uncomfortable, or simply need a break.
Parents have no reason to feel embarrassed or worried if their baby cries during newborn photographs. I expect it. You do not need to apologize because your newborn is behaving like a newborn.
Sometimes a feeding solves the problem. Sometimes baby needs a cuddle with Mom or Dad. And sometimes we simply move away from one setup and try something gentler. Patience is part of newborn photography.
What If My Baby Will Not Sleep?
Your newborn does not have to sleep through the entire session. Although many traditional newborn photographs feature sleeping babies, awake newborn portraits can be just as meaningful. Open eyes, little stretches, tiny yawns, and even curious expressions can become some of the photographs parents treasure most.
I work with the baby who arrives at the session rather than trying to make every baby behave exactly the same way. Your final gallery should reflect your baby, not a checklist of poses.
Preparing Mom, Dad and Siblings
Your newborn may be the smallest person at the session, but they do not need to be the only person photographed. Parent and sibling photographs can become some of the most meaningful images from a newborn gallery.
For family photographs, I recommend clothing that coordinates without matching exactly. Soft neutrals, cream, beige, grey, muted blue, warm earth tones, and gentle textures usually work beautifully with my clean newborn style.
Try to avoid very large logos, neon colours, or extremely busy patterns that may distract from the connection between you and your baby.
Most importantly, choose clothing you feel comfortable in. And parents—please don’t feel you need to look perfectly rested. You have just welcomed a baby.
My job is to guide you with flattering lighting, positioning, and posing so that your photographs feel natural and beautiful.
Preparing Older Siblings
If an older brother or sister will be participating, you don’t need to spend the morning telling them they must smile perfectly or behave for the photographer. That can sometimes put more pressure on children. Instead, talk about the session in a positive way.
You might tell them that we are going to take photographs with their new baby and have some special family time together. Depending on your child’s age, we may keep sibling photographs short and simple.
Young children are not expected to sit perfectly still for a long newborn session. We work with their attention span, not against it.
Allow Plenty of Time
- Newborn sessions are intentionally not rushed.
- A baby may need feeding.
- They may need changing.
- They may settle immediately—or require extra time.
This flexibility is one reason newborn photography is different from many other types of portrait sessions.
I would much rather slow down and allow your baby what they need than rush through a setup simply because we planned to complete it.
Parents often relax considerably once they realize there is no expectation for everything to happen according to a strict minute-by-minute schedule.
What Parents Do During the Session
One of the best things you can do is relax. Once the individual newborn photographs begin, you may be able to simply sit nearby, watch, and enjoy seeing your baby’s tiny details being documented. I will guide you when I need your assistance.
When it is time for family or parent photographs, I will guide your positioning so you don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose. Your job is not to manage the photography session. Your job is simply to be present with your new baby.
Keep Expectations Gentle
Pinterest and Instagram can be wonderful for inspiration, but newborn photography should never become a competition to recreate someone else’s gallery.
Every baby has different flexibility, feeding patterns, sleep preferences, temperament, size, and comfort level. That individuality is part of what makes newborn photography meaningful.
We can discuss colours, props, photos you enjoy, and the overall feeling you want your gallery to have. From there, I create a session around your baby.
Sometimes the simplest image—a newborn resting peacefully on a soft neutral background—becomes the photograph a parent loves the most.
Think Beyond the Digital Gallery
Your newborn will never be this little again. Although digital photographs make sharing with family easy, I also encourage parents to think about how they want to experience these photographs years from now.
A beautifully printed portrait can become part of your home. An album can preserve the entire story of the session. Wall artwork lets your child’s portrait become part of your family’s everyday environment, rather than remaining forgotten on a phone or hard drive.
For me, the finished photograph is not only a digital file. It is a memory worth holding, displaying, and eventually passing down.
Frequently Asked Questions About Newborn Photography
When should newborn photos be taken?
My newborn sessions are typically planned for approximately 5–21 days after birth, although older newborns can absolutely still be photographed. The session simply may be adapted to your baby’s age, alertness, and comfort.
When should I book my newborn photographer?
It is best to inquire during pregnancy whenever possible. Use your due date as a tentative reference, and confirm your final session date after your baby arrives.
Does my newborn need to sleep for the session?
No. Sleeping photographs are beautiful, but awake newborn photographs can be, too. I follow your baby’s cues throughout the session.
Do I need to bring newborn outfits and props?
You do not need to purchase a large collection of outfits or props. I provide wraps and selected photography props, and we can discuss styling before your session.
What happens if my baby needs to be fed?
We stop for a feeding. Feeding, changing, soothing, and cuddling breaks are expected parts of a newborn session.
What happens if my baby will not do a particular pose?
We move on. I never force a newborn into a pose just to get a photograph.
